This white paper outlines some of the benefits and technical features of Microsoft SharePoint's Managed Metadata features such as Term Store. This functionality allows upgrading SharePoint deployments to greatly enhance the end-user’s SharePoint experience by making it much easier to search and navigate through SharePoint documents. New Term Store features were introduced in SharePoint 2010 and enhanced in SharePoint 2013, and facilitate the introduction of standardized controlled vocabularies that can be used for searching and navigation. This functionality can facilitate semantic searching for SharePoint resources, whereas previously, only syntactic searching was available.
